Planetarium Essays

My Special Field Trip

By S.B., grade 6

The field trip that I went on was to the amazing Planetarium at Glendale College. We went into a dark room and looked up to the ceiling and there it was…outer space! The woman that demonstrated everything to us would point (with her laser pointer) to planets, constellations, stars and even galaxies. It’s kind of hard to believe that it looked exactly like the night sky that we know and love, but it did!  We saw Saturn, the “north star”, the Milky Way Galaxy, Jupiter and even more. It was one of the so called “experiences of a lifetime”! It took almost 30 computers to make the show happen…but it was worth it!

The Planetarium

By H.P., grade 6

My field trip to the planetarium was very fun.  My favorite part was when they went all the way to the outskirts of the Local Galaxy.  I learned a lot about space and the galaxies.  The other reason it was awesome was then they talked about the gods and goddesses.  It’s amazing how the Greeks figured out what the stars look like.  I never knew that we had lots of galaxies. It was a great field trip.

The Planetarium

By N.T., grade 6

The Planetarium was amazing.  We had a great professor who taught us all about our solar system.  One of the things she showed us was how the planets rotate around the sun.  She told us that Pluto was made up mostly of ice which I found surprising.  Our professor showed us what our galaxy look liked from the side.  But I think that my favorite part of the field trip was when she showed us the stars and what they would look like if she connected star to star.  I love going to the Planetarium. I liked this trip better than when I was in 3rd grade because I understood the solar system better.  I think we all learned a lot from the planetarium.  I didn’t want to leave so early, but we had to get back to school.  I hope we can go again.

Field Trip Summary

By K.Z., grade 6

The science field trip to the Planetarium was a very fun experience.  I had a great time and I enjoyed learning more about space.  It was fascinating to be able to see the Earth from outer space.  I also liked seeing and learning about all the difference of how fast each of the planets revolved around the sun.  I hope I will be able to go on more fun and educational field trips like this one.

HRS Science 5th Grader Eyeball Dissection
October, 2009

In conclusion to our study of the eye and light, the fifth grade class dissected cow eyes. Following are student summaries describing the experience and explaining which of their school-wide learning expectations they think best apply to their experience. Perhaps we have some budding ophthalmologists among the group!

From “HG”, gr. 5:
When I started it felt gross. It actually felt worse with the gloves on. When I dissected, my favorite part was cutting the fat. The part I kept was the lens. When I started I thought it would be gross, but it was really fun.
It helped me understand the eye because it showed us where the parts were.
My favorite part was cutting away the fat. My least favorite part was seeing inside the eye.
Dissecting helped us become physically confident because we are learning about the eye and lifelong learners because we worked hard to follow directions given to us.

From “BD”, gr. 5
The cow’s eye was really big. It was cold and smelled like paint. M cow’s eye had a lot of eyelashes and the iris was blue. When I cut into the eye, I thought it would squirt out at me. I was able to see parts of the eye I studied for the test. I was happy I was able to dissect the eye. It was really cool.
My favorite part was finding the lens. My least favorite part was holding the eye and having the liquid fall on my hand when we were cutting into it.
I was becoming a lifelong learner because I was paying attention and learning about the eye when I was dissecting it. I was becoming artistically enriched because this is something I’ve never done before and it was fun learning about the eye and then cutting one open.
